Mountain Communities

Nederland, Colorado is a town like no other.  Tucked in the mountains just west of Boulder, Nederland has a history rich in mining and music.  Known today as the gateway to outdoor recreation in the nearby Indian Peaks Wilderness, Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest and James Peak Wilderness.   The community is rich in unique shops, amazing outdoor beauty, friendly locals, and a vibrant music scene.

Lyons, Colorado is a small, intimate community known as the Double Gateway to the Rockies for its dual highways that take you up the North and South St. Vrain Canyons to Rocky Mountain National Park (just 20 miles west) and beyond.  It is a mecca for artists, outdoor enthusiasts and musicians. Lyons offers fun restaurants, bars and coffeehouses featuring live music.  Lyons has become popular for its music festivals.

Jamestown, Colorado, was mining community where, in its heyday, about 400 miners lived.  One claim produced more than $5 million in gold and copper ore. The boom lasted only a few years before the town was deserted for a decade. Remnants of the mining town's hotels, dance halls and parlor houses are still present here, but the town's most visible elements are a series of restored cabins, now converted to year-round residences.  Present-day Jamestown is a quiet mountain community; steep canyon walls and thick forests surrounding the hamlet limit its growth. Make sure to stop by the Mercantile, the town's only spot for food and drinks and a great place to meet and converse with local residents, a mix of independent thinkers and artists. Nearby Brainard Lake has hiking at the foot of craggy mountains, as well as fishing and picnicking.

Other smaller close-by mountain communities include Salina, Gold Hill, Allenspark and Ward -- all former mining towns with colorful histories.
